North Khorasan Kopet Dagh Registered as the 13th Biosphere Reserve

Kopeh Dagh region in North Khorasan province was registered as the 13th biosphere reserve of Iran at the 30th session of the Intergovernmental Council for the Human and Peace Corps - UNESCO, which was held in Indonesia's Palembang in the South Sumatra Province.

The 30th session of the Man and the Biosphere Programme International Co-ordinating Council (MAB-ICC), usually referred to as the MAB Council or ICC, was held in Palembang, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia from 23 to 28 July 2018.

A high ranking delegation from Iran, comprised of Deputy Governor of North Khorasan, the Director General of the Environment and the Director General of Natural Resources of the province, and representatives of DoE attended the Council meeting. Following the review of documentation by the Council, the Kopet Dagh region due to its natural attractions, rich biodiversity, cultural diversity and the presence of local and nomadic communities was approved as having the necessary criteria to be inscribed as a biosphere reserve site, and with the consent of the Member countries and approval of the Board of Directors of the Council it was registered by UNESCO as the 13th largest biosphere in Iran.
