IWM Approach the Ultimate Solution to Control Devastating Floods

Based on this report, in this ceremony, Dr. Shahbazi mentioned that the charities are FRWO’s strong arms in implementing IWM projects, and said: “Fortunately, people dwelling in arid areas with low precipitation have come to believe that IWM is the best approach for managing flash floods, recharging aquifers and preventing soil erosion.

He said that Iran is located on the arid belt of the globe with one-third of the average precipitation annually where we are witnessing an 11 mm decrease in precipitation and more than 50 mm increase in evapo-transpiration every 10 years that exacerbate flash flood occurances and devastation in the region. Therefore, we need an integrated planning for watershed management and flood control.

Shahbazi highlighted that from one hand 20% of our country is located in high risk areas prone to flash floods, and on the other hand, most of the water used in the country is supplied from groundwater resources. As the result the country is in critical conditions in terms of groundwater depletion. Therefore, the best strategy to recharge the aquifers is to implement the IWM projects.
