Acting Head of FRWO said the reduction in flood damages is the direct result of IWM interventions that helped  reduce both flood damages and soil erosion significantly.

According to FRWO’s website, the 40th session of coordination committee for IWM implementation chaired by Khosrow Shahbazi, Acting Head of FRWO was held at FRWO Headquarters on Saturday with the agenda of review of impacts of IWM implementation on flood control.

In this meeting, Dr. Shahbazi noted that flood damage is the result of unsustainable human activities in the nature. As such flood is the nature reaction to human aggression to natural ecosystems.

He emphasized that in addition to mechanical operation, biological and biomechanical measures should be taken at field level in order to ensure effectiveness in flood control operations.

He described the role of rangelands vital in sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems and added that we have to develop various functions of rangelands in an effective way. In this paradigm, the function of rangelands should not be restricted to fodder production for grazing. In contrast, the capacities of rangelands should be developed in terms of economic viability notably with the development of medicinal herbs and wood farming.

Acting Head of FRWO noted that according to the Sixth Development Plan, FRWO is mandated to develop the cultivation of medicinal herbs in100, 000 hectares all over the country. He concluded that by the end of the Sixth Development Plan the cultivation of medicinal herbs would reach to250, 000 hectares.
