World Wetlands Day and the 50th anniversary of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands were marked on Tuesday, February 16, during a ceremony in Tehran in the presence of Iran’s First Vice-President, Dr. Es’haq Jahangiri.

According to FRWO's website, quoted from Government Information Center (GIC), in this ceremony, Dr. Es'haq Jahangiri referring to the vital importance of preserving and rehabilitating Zagros forests said: "Today, Zagros forests are facing a new disease and have suffered a lot of damage, and we must use international aid to rehabilitate these forests."

First Vice-President emphasizing that participation of the people, civil society, elites as well as scientific and social activists contributes to the improvement of the environment, he said: "In order to protect the environment, the Government needs to involve the people and related sectors in environmental efforts to support the goals to be successful."

Referring to the signing of the Ramsar Convention fifty years ago with the participation of 18 countries, the First Vice President said: "This agreement was one of the first environmental conventions in the world, which was signed with the slogan “Inextricable link between water, wetland and life”. The participants in that meeting wanted to convey the message to the general public that this great slogan and goal must be heeded everywhere. Today, the members of this treaty have reached 171 countries and a large number of wetlands in the world and Iran have been registered".

It is notable that the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, named after the city of Ramsar in Iran, where it was signed in 1971.
